Work

experience

Independent Marketing Consultant
2013 - Present

Working with clients and agencies on an ad-hoc basis supporting them with a variety of marketing needs.  So far this has included brand development, marketing strategy, acquistion planning, insight & analysis.

Data Director, Golley Slater
2003 - 2013

As the Data Director at Golley Slater I was responsible for the delivery of all things data, managing a team of analysts and database specialists. From the very technical - databases, data processing, data engineering and channel integration - to the analytical - segmentation, modelling & insights.  I also delivered research, strategy development and provided insight to drive creative integration. I took pride in ensuring that all the work we delivered was done so with our feet on the ground, making sure everything was fit for purpose - it did what it needed to do.

Managing Partner, Fullgroove
2000 - 2003

Fullgroove was a Database Company set-up to provide Mail Order & Retail clients with fit-for-purpose databases.  These databases were highly flexible ensuring they could always support the needs of this fast moving sector.  We provided clients with security of data management alongside input & delivery to maximise the return from the data they held.

Head of Data, EHS Brann

1999 - 2000

I was promoted to Head the entire data function looking after teams I hadn't previously work in - Database Management & Data Processing - and reporting to the main board.  This part of the business had a turnover of over £3m/annum and over 70 staff working in it.  The shift in role to management gave me valuable business experience but required little of my analytical and marketing skills - where I get true satisfaction.

Head of Analysis, EHS Brann

1997 - 2000

After 2 years at Brann I was given the role as Head of Analysis.  My team and I supported all agency clients and integrated with both the technical database teams and also the very non-technical account teams.  We also supported Media through campaign analysis and Planning by striving to find insights in the data.  It was during this time that I developed the first inception of the Unilver/Cadbury Consortium database,  the first large consumer database prior to the launch of Tecso Clubcard.

Marketing Analyst, EHS Brann

1995 - 1997

I began my career at Brann working as part of the FMCG team.  The team was a mix of planners, account directors and analysts all working together to develop better campaigns for our clients which included Guinness, Grants, Quaker, Barr, Pedigree.  I then progressed to work within the B2B team working with David Wilson Homes and then the Finance team working with Norwich Union, Friends Provident and Alliance and Leicester.  In a short time I gained a huge amount of experience and client exposure.

Direct Marketing Analyst, Abbey National (Santander)

1994 - 1995

The role at Abbey National was was secured as un-conditional 6 months before graduating.  I reported to the Head of Direct Marketing and worked within the Direct Marketing team.  This gave me great experience of the wider marketing challenges and a chance to learn how clients worked with agencies and what was required of each other.  It inspired me to understand more about the entire marketing task rather than just the data requirement.  However, the role was mainly around targeting selections with in-house database systems with limited opportunity to truely interrogate data within SAS and other analysis tools.

Marketing Analyst (Undergraduate), Lloyds TSB
1992 - 1993

Reporting to the Head of Marketing Analysis I used in-house databases to extract customer data and then SAS to interrogate this data and develop propensity models as required.  My main task was to support the Direct Marketing function with response analysis, predictive modelling and targeting selections.

Education
BSc Hon Applied Statistics, Sheffield Hallam University
1990 - 1994

A degree in Applied Statistics covering lots of aspects but most notably and usefully multi-variate modelling, time-series forecasting, survey data analysis & SAS programming skills.

The course included a placement year which I found myself at LLoyds TSB having been quite determined to work within business rather than the pharmaceutical or government sector like my peers.  This role I found gave me invaluable experience at the beginning of my career.
